OCTOCEDRON Abscisus Vacuus

This DAHIMO model is made from 4 mm birch plywood, laser-cut with high precision, and composed of 72 segments (48 sides of hexagons and 24 sides of squares) to be assembled with PVA glue (not included). The 72 interlocking joints connect the faces precisely: glue is not required, but recommended for added stability.

The resulting object is a truncated octahedron, one of the thirteen Archimedean solids, created by cutting off the vertices of a regular octahedron. It features 8 regular hexagons and 6 squares, symmetrically arranged in a harmonious structure.

Assembly is careful but accessible: the solid takes shape through a logical and modular sequence, producing a lightweight and visually striking form. A combination of structural rigor and elegant design.

Historically, the drawing is based on Leonardo da Vinci’s illustrations for the De Divina Proportione by Luca Pacioli. The “vacuus” version emphasizes internal proportions and geometric clarity, enhancing transparency and depth.

In sacred geometry, the truncated octahedron symbolizes a balance between structure and openness. As a decorative object, it plays with light and shadow, ideal for modern interiors or museum displays.
