This model is made of 4-millimeter birch plywood. It consists of a series of curved rings and vertical elements that fit together precisely without the need for glue. Assembling it requires a bit of patience, but thanks to careful design and the accuracy of the cuts, the final structure is surprisingly stable and lightweight. Once completed, the sphere, measuring about 12 centimeters in diameter, can be hung, for example from a car’s rear-view mirror, or used as a desk ornament or decorative accent. While glue is not required, applying a small amount can help improve long-term stability, as natural wood movement over time may loosen some joints.
This small sculpture is a free interpretation of the geometric solids drawn by Leonardo da Vinci for the celebrated treatise De Divina Proportione by Luca Pacioli. Although it doesn’t replicate any specific model, it clearly draws inspiration from the airy and intricate form of the so-called Septuaginta Duarum Vacuus. The result is an object with a strong Renaissance character, blending aesthetics, geometry, and ingenuity in true Leonardesque spirit.
