An object that appears to float, yet it is based on one of the most fascinating mechanical principles of the Renaissance: the gimbal suspension. This wooden model is a contemporary reinterpretation inspired by a drawing attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, preserved in the Codex of Madrid, in which he studies how to stabilize a rotating axis through a series of concentric rings.
The suspension, made of three interlocking rings, is crafted from 4 mm laser-cut birch. The base and stand are made from 8 mm tanganika, hand-finished with natural wax using the refined techniques of DAHIMO’s artisans. The ring structure can be lifted and separated from the base, but the model is designed to be placed on a surface, not suspended.
Assembly is simple and requires just a bit of PVA glue (not included). Once completed, the model becomes a functioning mechanism: the rings rotate within one another, evoking motion through space and the pursuit of perfect balance. Its scenic impact is striking, making it ideal for creative environments, museum displays, or design and science studios.
This is not a replica, but a poetic tribute to Leonardo’s vision, transforming a mechanical idea into a dynamic and elegant object. It is one of DAHIMO’s most appreciated models for its ingenious simplicity and visual appeal.
