The DAHIMO Cupola is not a traditional model kit, but a modular self-supporting structure composed of individual birch plywood elements (4 mm). Each element is laser-cut and must be interlocked with the others to form a stable shape. However, users are free to experiment with different configurations. A single kit includes 24 pieces, which form the basic dome, but multiple kits can be combined to build larger and more complex structures.
The concept originates from drawings attributed to Leonardo da Vinci in the Codex Atlanticus, folio 899v, where he explores interlocking construction systems held together solely by geometry and gravity, without glue or fasteners. Starting in 1989, Dutch architect Rinus Roelofs reinterpreted these designs, creating modular domes that demonstrate the same principles of balance, load distribution and structural logic.
The DAHIMO kit is a faithful translation of this approach. Once assembled, the dome stands autonomously thanks to its own weight and geometry. It cannot be lifted or moved without disassembling it first. Its true strength lies in its versatility: it can be dismantled and reassembled in countless variations, especially when combining several kits, an ongoing invitation to make, unmake and remake.
Perfect for educational activities, families, STEAM labs or workshops, this model allows users to grasp essential concepts of geometry, self-supporting structures and design. It is also a popular item in museum bookshops, thanks to its elegant simplicity and deep roots in Leonardo’s thinking.
