Leonardo’s Machine Gun

A wooden model kit to assemble, inspired by one of Leonardo da Vinci’s most fascinating military inventions: the famous fan-shaped machine gun, a multi-barrel weapon designed to increase firepower without sacrificing stability. The original drawing, found in the Codex Atlanticus (folio 140r), represents an early attempt to overcome the limitations of Renaissance artillery, foreshadowing the concept of modern repeating weapons.

The DAHIMO model translates the ingenuity of Leonardo’s vision into a scaled-down creation, preserving the layout and experimental character of the original design. A small central screw allows you to manually adjust the elevation of the barrels, while the wheels actually turn, letting you reposition the model after assembly. One of the most revolutionary features in this design is the idea of breech loading: rather than being loaded from the front, the weapon could be rearmed from the rear, an innovative principle far ahead of its time.

The model is crafted from carefully selected materials: the main structure is made of 4 mm birch plywood, the wheels are in 8 mm poplar for added strength, and the barrels are round birch rods, painted black to create a realistic, striking appearance.

Assembly requires PVA glue (not included) and a bit of patience, but the process is intuitive and highly satisfying. Clear instructions guide you step by step.

Once completed, Leonardo’s machine gun becomes a visually impactful and historically inspired object, perfect for display in a study, classroom or museum. It is one of DAHIMO’s most appreciated models in museum bookshops, o ering a tangible glimpse into the imaginative force and technical daring of the Renaissance master.
