A large decorative model that pays tribute to Leonardo da Vinci’s explorations of mechanical flight. Made from 4 mm laser-cut birch plywood, it is assembled using PVA glue (not included). The building process is intuitive and of medium difficulty, the most delicate part is the final installation of the strings, which allow the model to hang properly and achieve its distinctive motion.
The ornithopter is designed to remain suspended in mid-air: using a simple string system, the wings can be made to flap gently in a rhythmic, harmonious motion. When placed in a breezy environment, such as a balcony or near a window, it can begin moving spontaneously, creating an elegant and poetic effect. It is not based on a single drawing but rather inspired by Leonardo’s visionary dream of human flight.
Though not intended for educational use, this is one of the most beloved objects among collectors and Leonardo enthusiasts. Its light, airy design and the ability to move with the faintest breeze make it one of DAHIMO’s best-selling models. Perfect for hanging at home, in creative spaces, or anywhere the dream of flight is still alive.
