This wooden model kit is made entirely of 4 mm birch plywood, laser-cut with high precision. It requires PVA glue (not included) and a bit of patience, especially for the final step: the ornithopter is designed to hang in mid-air using suspension threads, and correct balancing is essential to achieve its mesmerizing motion.
Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s studies on human flight, this model is not based on a specific drawing from his Codices, but rather reimagines his experimental spirit with elegance. Compared to the medium version, the wing structure here is split into two sections on each side, allowing for more complex movements that mimic the flapping of a bird. The wings are intentionally left uncovered (no fabric is applied) so the wooden frame remains visible, highlighting the internal skeleton and its ingenious construction. Once assembled, the model spans an impressive wingspan of 127 cm (50 inches), making it a striking and scenic display piece.
A gentle thread connected to the body can be used to trigger the wing motion, or even a light breeze (from a terrace or open window) is often enough to set it in motion. This spontaneous, almost magical movement is what makes it one of the most beloved DAHIMO kits: a decorative object full of charm, coming to life as soon as you look at it.
Like all DAHIMO models, this one blends craftsmanship, design, and a passion for Renaissance invention. Ideal for display in homes, creative studios, or educational spaces,
it is a best seller in many museum bookshops.
