Leonardo’s Bombarda

Assembling model made of laser-cut plywood: poplar (8 mm), birch (4 mm), and a 1 mm beech veneer used to form the cannon. The kit requires PVA glue (not included) and features a simple and satisfying assembly process. With few pieces and clear instructions, it is ideal even for those approaching historical model building for the first time.

The design is based on a drawing found in the Codex Atlanticus, folio 32r, where Leonardo da Vinci studies a special type of cannon intended to fire a projectile that would explode mid-air, scattering a shower of smaller fragments onto enemy forces. While bombards already existed in military use at the time, Leonardo’s idea for this advanced ammunition reveals his visionary and experimental spirit, anticipating the concept of modern cluster bombs.

The DAHIMO model reproduces the essential structure of the cannon, with a fixed base and a barrel formed by a rolled beech veneer to create a realistic hollow tube. The barrel can be tilted manually up to 90°, allowing users to adjust its vertical position and enhancing the model’s lifelike appearance. There are no wheels, neither in Leonardo’s original design nor in this scale version, which accurately reflects the nature of a heavy, stationary weapon.

Once assembled, the bombard becomes a compact and evocative object—perfect for display in a study, classroom, or museum setting. It is one of the most appreciated models in museum bookshops, offering a tangible glimpse into a lesser-known but brilliant chapter of Renaissance military engineering.
