A small Renaissance engineering gem that surprises with its form and effectiveness. Built using 8 mm ash dowels and 6 mm beech rods, precisely cut and assembled through interlocking notches, no glue is needed. With careful construction, the bridge stands solidly on its own, and once completed, the structure is stable enough to be gently moved without falling apart.
The design is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s famous self-supporting bridge, found in the Codex Atlanticus folio 69ar and 71v, where he explores the principle of “reciprocal supports”: sturdy structures made from simple elements that hold together through mutual pressure and gravity alone. The term “self-supporting” refers precisely to this ability to remain standing without glue or fasteners.
This bridge holds strong educational and symbolic value. It is one of DAHIMO’s best sellers, celebrated for representing one of Leonardo’s most iconic ideas in the form of an affordable kit. Widel appreciated by schools of all levels as well as museum gift shops, it combines simple construction with strong visual and conceptual appeal.
