This small wooden model is made of 4 mm birch plywood, laser-cut with care. It requires PVA glue (not included) and is easy to assemble, although the final step is the most delicate: the ornithopter’s body is suspended above its base using ultra-thin “invisible” threads that must be placed carefully to achieve the right balance.
This is not a mechanical model, its charm lies entirely in its visual effect, based on the principle of tensegrity. Once assembled, the flying machine appears to float in mid-air, held up by wires that are almost impossible to spot at first glance. The result is a poetic, elegant, almost magical object: a quiet tribute to Leonardo’s exploration of flight, more an evocation than a literal reconstruction.
Designed for indoor settings like desks, shelves, or creative spaces, it’s one of the most appreciated DAHIMO gadgets, lightweight, refined, and easy to gift. Perfect for first-time builders or anyone who enjoys Renaissance-inspired design with a touch of wonder.
